LA SORGENTE DI FRANCESCA
The story of La Sorgente is my story. I have happy memories here; I see my children run through the tall grass, losing sight of them along the way; I see my husband talk amicably with the farmers who took care of our vineyards and olive trees even then. They called us Sir and Ma'am when we arrived and I looked at them not understanding. They were so straightforward, so sincere, without needing anything but what was from the land that surrounded them and from its fruits - that land they loved without compromises. Even then I asked myself..“who are the real Sir and Ma'am?”
La Sorgente… this place so absolutely normal then, and so rare today.
It is positioned harmoniously in the hills that embrace Florence, the Florence that I abandoned many years ago for America, faithful and bubbly life companion of a man with a million interests. The Florence remembered with melancholy on American evenings, even more melancholic when the kids were already in bed with the rain as their lullaby.
Many steps away from an everyday life and unique like all lives. Florence and La Sorgente were always in my heart, like a faithful shelter for a wandering soul. I returned here some years ago and I was fascinated perhaps as I had never been before: that fascination of true love, which makes already experienced emotions seem new again; that sense of strong, warm protection, reinforced by surreal silences interrupted by sounds lost in memory. Emotions, tears and joy, memories, delicious fruits of experience now so detested. Steps of life.
La Sorgente… a project born in the soul, lived and confronted with heart, while remembering the words of a noted poet of the past: “I slept and dreamed that life was joy – I awoke and saw that life was duty – I acted and duty became joy”.
It is an ambitious project that evolved continuously. All of my pasts and presents had to live together, living forever in a window, an arch, a stone guarded against ruthless architects and business consultants, a wooden door that seemed impossible to move when I was a child. This is La Sorgente: a piece of history that sinks its roots into the times of Dante, a piece of my life, and now, I hope, a small piece of yours.
